Be a friend

In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out.  It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being.  We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

The cleaning people are coming in to clean our house this morning so I have to do the pre-cleaning before they get here. I would hate to have them see our normal clutter. Since I am tied up I will send you another Daily from the past.

Is Schweitzer right, or what? I think the best times in or lives are when we share experiences with friends and loved ones. Once I realized that almost everyone I meet is a potential friend, life got better. It may start with only a smile, a brief recognition of the value of something they are doing, or an expression of appreciation. I suppose some people would measure friendships by the depth of the relationship, but no matter the degree, friendship always comes from human interaction. It can run anywhere from a relationship where we exchange even our darkest secrets to just a wave of recognition across a room with someone you have seen but never really met.

Unfortunately many people are in our lives for only a brief period of time. I suspect if we thought that each day was the last day we ever would see a friend or acquaintance we might take more time to tell them how much they are appreciated.

I am luckier than most as I am often given the opportunity to renew friendships. Today as an example I will attend the Kiwanis International Christmas luncheon. My years of work at Kiwanis were some of the best years of my life, not just because we were doing so much for children, but also because I had a chance to work with so many good people. Once a year I am invited to join them in a brief celebration of Christmas, which is great in itself. The lunch always includes good food and good sprit. But what makes it special for me is the chance to again spend a few moments with people who meant so much to me for so many years.

A friend is one of the nicest things you can have,

And one of the best things you can be.

Yesterday,

All those backups seemed a waste of pay.

Now my database has gone away.

Oh I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly,

There’s not half the files there used to be,

And there’s a milestone hanging over me

The system crashed so suddenly.

I pushed something wrong

What it was I could not say.

Now all my data’s gone

and I long for yesterday-ay-ay-ay.

Yesterday,

The need for back-ups seemed so far away.

I knew my data was all here to stay,

Now I believe in yesterday.

What is a friend?

A single soul dwelling in two bodies.

The tensions of life were threatening to get a strangle hold on Bob, and after he’d finished a good dinner, he relaxed mindlessly in a soft chair next to the stereo, with a stiff drink in his hand. His wife knew nothing of his nervous state, and she climbed onto his lap with the thought of trying to wheedle a fur coat out of him, and snuggled and murmured and fondled.

“Good heavens, Ethel,” he exploded, “get off of me! I get enough of this at the office.”

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

My English professor was stopped for speeding. When asked why she was driving so fast, she quoted Robert Frost: “I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep.”

“But, Miss,” replied the officer, obviously familiar with the poet, “Frost chose the road less traveled, and, unfortunately for you, this wasn’t it.”

A lawyer asked a boy, who was a witness in court: “Did anyone tell you what to say in court?”

“Yes, sir.”

“I thought so! Who was it?”

“My father, sir.”

“And what did he tell you?”

“He said the lawyers would try to get me all tangled up, but if I stuck to the truth, I would be all right.”

“I never married because there was no need. I have three pets at home which answer the same purpose as a husband. I have a dog that growls every morning, a parrot that swears all afternoon, and a cat that comes home late at night.”

Two men were talking about the secret of a long and happy marriage.

“Our marriage” said one “is built on trust and understanding.”

“My wife doesn’t trust me and I don’t understand her.”

Judge: I know you, don’t I?

Defendant: Uh, yes.

Judge: All right, tell me, how do I know you?

Defendant: Judge, do I have to tell you?

Judge: Of course, you might be obstructing justice not to tell me.

Defendant: Okay. I was your bookie.

There are two kinds of people: those who do the work, and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there.

A man left for work one Friday afternoon. But it was payday, so instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend partying with the boys and spending his entire pay check.

When he finally appeared at home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his angry wife and was barraged for nearly two hours with a tirade befitting his actions. Finally his wife stopped the nagging and said to him, “How would you like it if you didn’t see me for two or three days?” He replied, “That would be fine with me.”

Monday went by and he didn’t see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. But on Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his eye.

You can make more friends in a month by being interested in them than in ten years by trying to get them interested in you.
