Ray's musings and humor

A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools.

Spanish Proverb

I have been reminded recently of the importance of not letting yourself believe what you want things to be rather than what they are. I am thinking specifically of those who view their aches, pains and other distresses as probably being nothing to be concerned about. Over time many of us just accept the growing discomfort as we learn to tolerate what is going on. And for far too many the day of reckoning comes as they learn that their ailment has progressed to a very serious degree, some must go through severe remedial procedures while others face permanent disability or death.

I have had three potentially life threatening events in my life all of which were caught early enough to allow my recovery. I have a great set of Docs who established a base line while I was well who then jumped on any deviation during my regular checkups. These days seniors like me are even offered no-cost wellness visits with our primary care physicians that help us to understand our health choices.

It is not brave to ignore warning signs no matter how small they may be, in fact avoidance of medical advice is somewhat cowardly in my mind. So please take care of yourself. I need all the friends I can get. I found the following article on the Healthy Tribes blog and it pretty much outlines how I am working to avoid health problems while improving my sense of wellbeing. Since you are one of the most important people to me I want to share it with you.

How To Take Care Of Your Health

Our health is the most important factor that we need to give much attention to. When we get sick, everything around us is affected; our work, family, social life, and etc. That is why to stay healthy is very important so you can do anything that you want without any hassle. But most people say that taking care of your health could be expensive because you need to invest from it. Most people just get concerned of their health if they get sick but if they are healthy they don’t even care. But wouldn’t it be better if we maintain the good health that we have by preventing any sickness to develop? Now to help you fight sickness to develop, here are some of the things that you need to do.

Get Health Insurance

The very first thing that you need to secure if you can afford it is to get a personal health insurance. It’s either you get it privately or from the company that you work for, it doesn’t matter as long as you have health insurance. Your health insurance will not only save your life from sickness but also your pocket from possible expenses. If you have health insurance you don’t have to worry from medical and hospital bills because everything will be taken care of the insurance company.

Eat Healthy Food

Another way to protect you from getting sick is to eat healthy food, food that is rich in vitamins and nutrients. I’m actually referring to fruits and vegetables and other suggested healthy recipes. Avoid food that can cause you to develop serious illnesses like high blood pressure, heart problems, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and many more, foods like fatty food, sweets, foods that are high in calories and carbohydrates.

Hit the Gym

Next thing that you can do to keep yourself healthy is to exercise. You can hit the gym if you want to have a proper fitness program. There you will have the chance to use fitness equipments that can help you lose weight and burn calories. You will invest time and money for this but it will be worth it because this is the best way to lose weight and become fit. This is also the best way to maintain your weight and size.

Stop Your Bad Habits

One of the main causes of sickness is vices such as alcohol, smoking, and drugs. If you have these kinds of vices, now is the right time to quit it. These harmful substances will not do you any good especially with your health. So, if you want to stay healthy, you need to stop your vices and start to develop a healthy lifestyle.

“Health is like money, we never have a true idea of its value until we lose it.”

A young minister sitting down to dinner was about to say Grace when he opened the casserole dish that his thrifty bride had prepared from countless refrigerator leftovers.

“I don’t know,” he said dubiously. “It seems to me that we’ve blessed all this stuff before.”

A minister decided to do something a little different one Sunday morning.

He said, “Today, in church, I am going to say a single word and you are going to help me preach. Whatever single word I say, I want you to sing whatever hymn that comes to your mind.

The pastor shouted out “CROSS.” Immediately the congregation started singing in unison, “THE OLD RUGGED CROSS.”

The pastor hollered out “GRACE.” The congregation began to sing “AMAZING GRACE, how sweet the sound.”

The pastor said “POWER.” The congregation sang “THERE IS POWER IN THE BLOOD”.

The Pastor said “SEX!” The congregation fell in total silence.

Everyone was in shock. They all nervously began to look around at each other afraid to say anything. Then all of a sudden, way from in the back of the church, a little old 87-year-old grandmother stood up and began to sing “PRECIOUS MEMORIES.”

We can’t change how we started out but starting now we can change the ending.

A colleague was planning a trip to my business office and asked if I could find him a hotel with exercise facilities. I called several hotels, with no luck.

Finally, I thought I had found one. I asked the receptionist if the hotel had a weight room.

“No,” she replied, “but we have a lobby. You can wait there.”

A rabbi took a job at a Duracell factory.

His job is to stand on the production line and as the batteries go by, say, “I wish you long life”

A friend, who worked away from home all week, always made a special effort with his family on the weekends. Every Saturday morning he would take his 7-year old granddaughter out for a drive in the car for some bonding time. Just he and his granddaughter.

One particular Sunday however, he had a bad cold and really didn’t feel like being up at all. Luckily, his wife came to the rescue and said that she would take their granddaughter out. When they returned, the little girl anxiously ran upstairs to see her grandfather.

“Well, did you enjoy your ride with grandma ?”

“Oh yes, PaPa” the girl replied, “and do you know what ? We didn’t see a single dumb bastard anywhere we went today !”
